Mastering Aquarium Care: The Importance of Proper Lighting

Mastering reef tank lighting is the most critical step for coral health, coloration, and growth. Success hinges on finding the perfect balance of light intensity (PAR), a strict photoperiod, and correct light height, while ensuring your water remains crystal clear to prevent light-blocking yellowing pigments.
Understanding PAR: The Fuel for Photosynthesis
When it comes to coral lighting, standard human brightness measurements (like lumens) don't cut it. Instead, hobbyists rely on PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation), which measures the specific light wavelengths that symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) inside corals use to generate food.
Soft Corals & LPS: These fleshy corals generally thrive in the lower-to-moderate light.
SPS Corals: Small Polyp Stony (SPS) corals are highly demanding and require high-intensity light to maintain vibrant growth and color.
Because the water column naturally filters and scatters light, PAR decreases significantly as depth increases. You can measure these values in your system by using a dedicated, submersible meter (PAR Meter).
Dialing in Your Photoperiod
Your photoperiod is the total duration of light your tank receives each day. Consistency is key to coral health and preventing unwanted nuisance algae.
The Sweet Spot: Most successful reef keepers run a photoperiod of 8 to 10 hours of total light, often including 1-2 hour ramp-up and ramp-down periods to simulate sunrise and sunset.
The Danger of Overkill: Running your lights for 12 hours or more may seem beneficial, but it commonly triggers massive algae explosions and can photoinhibit corals, causing them to expel their zooxanthellae (bleaching).
Light Height and Tank Coverage
The distance between your fixture and the water surface dictates both the intensity and the spread of your light.
The Standard Rule: Most LED manufacturers recommend mounting their fixtures approximately 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30 cm) above the water surface.
Height Trade-offs: If you mount your lights lower, you concentrate the PAR in a smaller area but risk creating localized hot spots that can scorch corals. Raising the light lowers the peak PAR but dramatically improves tank spread, reducing harsh shadowing.
The Hidden Threat: Yellowing Pigments
Even with the most expensive, perfectly calibrated lighting system, your corals may still suffer if your water clarity is poor. Over time, organic waste buildup in the aquarium—such as accumulated debris, uneaten food, and dissolved organics—releases yellowing pigments (gelbstoff) into the water, which can reduce overall PAR (Photosynthetic Active Radiation) by 30%!
How it affects lighting: This yellow tint acts like a pair of polarized sunglasses, severely reducing both the intensity (PAR) and the spectral quality of the light penetrating the tank.
The Solution: To ensure your lighting functions optimally, perform regular water changes and utilize high-grade activated carbon in your filtration. Now, adding ozone (O3) to the system can have the same desired effect as carbon except its crystal blue water all of time. Ozone also breaks down a lot of coral toxins as well, preventing coral warfare in most cases.
