Mastering the "Big Three" parameters—alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium—is the secret to a thriving mixed reef tank. They work as a team. Corals use calcium and alkalinity to build their skeletons. Magnesium acts as the shield that keeps them in balance so corals can grow.

To help you succeed with your corals, let's break down exactly what each element does and how to keep them perfectly balanced.
1. Alkalinity: The Fuel for Growth
What it is: Alkalinity is the water's ability to resist changes in pH. In reef terms, it measures available carbonates and bicarbonates.
Why it matters: Corals and coralline algae use these carbonates to build the rigid base of their skeletons.
The Sweet Spot: Keep levels between 7.0--9.0 dKH (or up to 10--12 dKH for some SPS-heavy tanks).
Real-World Example: Think of alkalinity as the building blocks for a house. If you don't have enough materials, construction (coral growth) stops immediately.
2. Calcium: The Building Bricks
What it is: Calcium is a vital mineral that floats freely in your saltwater.
Why it matters: Hard corals (like LPS and SPS) take in calcium to form their hard, rocky structures.
The Sweet Spot: Keep levels between 400--450 ppm.
Real-World Example: Calcium is the concrete mix. Even with plenty of building blocks, the corals need this concrete to grow.
3. Magnesium: The Secret Peacekeeper
What it is: Magnesium is the third most common ion in natural seawater.
Why it matters: Calcium and carbonates naturally want to bond together and fall out of the water. This is called precipitation. Magnesium acts as a traffic cop. It wraps around these crystals to prevent them from locking together. This keeps both calcium and alkalinity floating in the water and ready for your corals.
The Sweet Spot: Keep levels between 1350--1450 ppm.
Why They Must Work Together
In a mixed reef tank, your Soft, LPS (Large Polyp Stony), and SPS (Small Polyp Stony) corals all pull from this mineral supply. If your magnesium is too low, calcium and alkalinity will prematurely bond. They will literally rain down as white dust inside your tank. You will find yourself adding supplements every day, but your numbers will never go up.
When the Big Three are balanced, you will see faster growth, better polyp extension, and vibrant coral colors.
How to maintain balance
Because your corals are constantly eating these elements, you must replace them. As noted by reefing hobbyists and experts alike, consistency is the ultimate goal.
Test Regularly: Test your alkalinity at least twice a week. Test calcium and magnesium once a week.
